Baby in Boston!

Jack is 1 year old!  Part of me feels like it's flown by, but part of me feels like he's been with us always.. .  Jonathan & I keep saying we can't really remember life before Jack.  As cliche as it may be, he is definitely the apple of our eye. He says "Dada"alllllll the time.  He's starting to walk FAST when we hold his hands (just started 2 weeks ago on Father's Day), and it's so fun that he can tell when we're being silly & cracks up!   AND we just went on a trip to BOSTON!  It was his first trip outside of California, complete with grandparents and an excursion to Maine.  And woo!  Boston was hot & sticky. He was a sweaty, sweaty little baby, haha.  He's definitely used to that SF chill.   I think by the end he was ready to be back to something familiar … on the 2nd to last day he had a meltdown because we wouldn't let him eat rocks… we're so mean! :) But overall we were so proud of him & had such a great adventure.

I might add more later, but here are just a few highlights..

This one actually wasn't from our trip, I just love his little face!

We saw Jenny!!!!

"I can't believe I ate the whole thing…"

This is what he was doing constantly - he would lead us from room to room.  So neat that he has a mind of his own!

Chubby Cheeks Love

Jack is starting to seem like he recognizes us & stares at our faces for long periods of time - AND he has given us a few tiny smiles!  So amazing.. it feels that much more rewarding when he's responding to us and giving us these long spans of calm, awake time.  I just want to eat him up!   Here's a shot from our 1-month-old photo shoot :)

Admiral Chubby Cheeks

Needless to say, we're totally smitten.  I can't quite still believe it's all real, but it's becoming more so every day.  Right now he's definitely in the fussy stage, but we've heard it peaks at 6 weeks, which is a week and a half away.. wishful thinking?? :)   He's starting to keep his eyes open for longer parts of the day which is amazing.   Funniest moment so far... okay, it wasn't funny, but all the times he's peed on us or clear across the room - I just have to marvel at his skills!  Toughest time so far was definitely the first week, just adapting & us all trying to figure it out (Jack included).  Best memories so far... all the times he's just calmly looking at us - ah!   Despite being sleep-deprived, we feel incredibly lucky.  Incredibly.

Procrastination... Procrasti-nay-ay-tion, it's making me wait...

That's right. I just dropped a Carly Simon reference on you. Jealous?

Grading at the airport - I just spent 25 minutes editing one essay & now I'm procrastinating on blogger. I can tell this is going to go well!

I was going to stay in and grade right now, but it is SO GORGEOUS outside.  It's blue, it's clear, it's sunny... I'm going to walk to get coffee, dag nab it!  (Watch, when I get outside it'll probably be 50 degrees, haha.)

P.S. This week a kid in my class put the classic "kick me" sign on the back of another kid when a sub was there.  People still do that?? Really?  And then of course I have to be the enforcer & get all strict with the kids.  Opposite of what I want.  All was redeemed though when we were talking about our Balclutha overnight trip & they freaked out at the prospect of watching a movie & eating pizza when we get back. (Literally screaming and hugging each other.) So easy to please!

Pancakes

Saturday morning &  pancake time!

Maybe next time I'll add bananas...

Key Lime Pie!

I randomly decided it was time to make key lime pie.  I've never made a pie before, so it was intimidating!  Oh, and the recipe said to get 20 limes - 20!  But I only used about 6, so now we have a lime explosion.

After all the juicing, our apartment smells like lime grove.

Before the oven...

Out of the oven!  (The specks are the zest) :)

Oh yeah!

Key Lime Pie
Ingredients
(Makes one pie)
1 (9 inch) prepared graham cracker crust
3 cups sweetened condensed milk  (Buy 2 14-oz cans)
1/2 cup sour cream
3/4 cup key lime juice  (Buy about 14 regular limes for juicing & zesting – not sure the amount of key limes)
1 tablespoon grated lime zest

Directions
.                Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
.                In a medium bowl, combine condensed milk, sour cream, lime juice, and lime rind. Mix well and pour into graham cracker crust.
Bake in preheated oven for 5 to 8 minutes, until tiny pinhole bubbles burst on the surface of pie. DO NOT BROWN! Chill pie thoroughly before serving. Garnish with lime slices and whipped cream if desired.

(I cooked 10 minutes based on recommendations from other people.)
